How to Care for Sensitive Hair: A Gentle Routine for Stronger, Healthier Strands

If your scalp often feels irritated, your hair breaks often, or your hair easily reacts to new products, you may have sensitive hair. Caring for sensitive hair requires a thoughtful, gentle approach that nourishes without overwhelming. The good news? With the right routine and ingredients, your hair can thrive.
1. Use Clean, Gentle Products
Avoid shampoos and conditioners with sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances, and alcohols that can strip your scalp of natural oils. Instead, look for formulas labeled sulfate-free, fragrance-free, or made for sensitive scalps. Ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, panthenol (ProVitamin B5), and oat extract help calm and hydrate.
2. Wash Less Frequently
Daily washing can dry out both your scalp and strands. Aim to wash every 2–3 days or as needed, using lukewarm (not hot) water. This helps preserve natural oils that protect and nourish your hair.
3. Be Gentle When Styling
Avoid harsh brushing, tight ponytails, and high-heat tools that can cause breakage or scalp tension. Use wide-tooth combs and soft scrunchies, and let your hair air-dry when possible.
4. Protect from the Elements
Sun, wind, and cold air can all aggravate sensitive hair. Wear hats in extreme weather, and consider using a leave-in conditioner or lightweight pre-style spray that adds a protective barrier.
5. Hydrate from Within
Sensitive hair can be a sign of nutritional imbalances or dehydration. Drink plenty of water and eat hair-healthy foods rich in vitamins A, C, D, E, and biotin.
Sensitive hair just needs a little extra love. With a simple, calming routine, your hair can feel stronger, look healthier, and be easier to manage day after day.
